Why Knowing Your Skin Type Matters
A daily skincare routine can help your skin look and feel its best, but different skin types have different needs. That is why understanding your skin type is the first step to properly caring for your skin.
Your skin type is mainly determined by how much sebum — the natural oil produced by your skin, your skin produces.
Identifying whether your skin is oily, dry, combination, or normal can help you better understand your skin's needs and choose suitable skincare products.
The Four Basic Skin Types and Their Characteristics
- 1. Oily Skin:
Oily skin produces an excess amount of sebum. This can make the skin appear shiny or feel greasy, especially around the T-zone — the forehead, nose, and chin.
- 2. Dry Skin:
Dry skin generally produces less sebum than other skin types. It may feel tight, rough, or flaky and can sometimes feel itchy or uncomfortable. One factor that can contribute to dry-feeling skin is a disrupted skin barrier. The skin barrier helps retain moisture, so when it is compromised, the skin may lose water more easily and feel dry.
- 3. Combination Skin:
Combination skin is when some areas of the face are oily while others are drier. You may notice more shine around the T-zone, while areas such as the cheeks may feel drier. Combination skin can look different from person to person and may also vary with factors such as weather and seasons.
- 4. Normal Skin:
Normal skin generally feels comfortable and balanced. It is neither excessively oily nor excessively dry. Unlike combination skin, it does not typically have noticeably oily areas alongside noticeably dry areas. The skin usually has a smooth, hydrated appearance and texture.
- What about sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin is generally not classified in the same way as the four basic skin types. While oily, dry, combination, and normal skin are largely related to sebum production, sensitive skin describes how reactive your skin is.
Sensitive skin may react more easily to certain skincare ingredients, such as fragrance, or to environmental factors such as pollution or changes in weather. This means you can have oily, dry, combination, or normal skin and also have sensitive skin.
How Can You Identify Your Skin Type at Home?
- Step 1:
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and gently pat it dry with a soft towel.
- Step 2:
Leave your skin without applying skincare products for about 30 minutes.
- Step 3:
Look closely at how your skin feels and appears.
- Oily:
Your skin appears shiny or feels oily across most of your face.
- Dry:
Your skin feels tight, rough, or flaky.
- Combination:
Your T-zone appears oily while other areas, such as your cheeks, feel drier.
- Normal:
Your skin feels comfortable and balanced, without noticeable excess oil or dryness.
